Much of early science and philosophy was dedicated to study of the discrete elements from which all matter is formed, born, or created. The Aristotelian system of looking at matter encompasses five elements: fire, air, water, earth, and aether (also known as quintessence), and this interpretation plays a part in alchemy. All that we know is comprised of some combination of these elements, and this way of viewing matter, of interpreting the world, is a common theme throughout many religious and philosophical systems.
What is more basic than the building blocks of Everything, after all?
Our Elements collection strives to express the characteristics of each element. We have taken a liberty in our aromatic renderings, and are reserving Aether as our source of inspiration for the remaining four elements. When you look at the root of inspire, inspirare: to breathe in, the description is fitting. An archaic meaning is 'to breathe upon', or 'to breathe life into'. We are thus channeling the pure essence latent in the elements:
Ignis - this is the fire present in nature, a deep primordial warmth which fuels the ebb and flow, the blood in our veins, and that languorous intake of breath when one is spent; think golden, think russet, and spiced musk (in the form of ambrette) - this composition evolves through a hive of bees and their fragrant wax, warm skin, golden saffron and henna, dried spices, and blood red citrus. Aeris - this is the cool breeze that sweeps across a grassy meadow during the spring, and is herbaceous innocence; cool greenish blue, characterized by the cobalt of german chamomile, mossy acacia farnesiana, the honeyed monochrome of linden blossom, and the dry flowers of orris. Perfume fit for a sylph.

Aquae - this is emerald green waves crashing against rocky beach littered with sun bleached driftwood, and the salty breeze; salty seaweed provides the brief shiver in a voyage at sea that drifts through the sunshine of lavender absolute, the wild grasses of vetiver, a sweet breath of burning driftwood, cool silence of rosemary, and deep green of galbanum. Mermaid eau de toilette.

Terrae - this is freshly turned soil, mosses, warm ripe vegetal hues, and growing things; think earthy, the forest floor, yet musky warmth, and deep sweetness - an olfactory trek through the deep woods, replete with the musk of truffles, the resinous sacrament of labdanum, freshly roasted coffee, spicy carrot seed, and the golden yet dusty leaves of patchouli. The unguent of the gnomes, if you follow Paracelsus and his elemental spirits of the earth.
